After graduating in Information Technology at the
University of Bologna, I moved to Ireland to study at the
Dublin Institute of Technology where I achieved a First-class
Honours MsC in Creative Digital Media specialising in
Mobile & Web Applications.
I lead the
Product User Experience at
VML Technology, where I collaborate with different teams to shape memorable
user experiences for the company's cross-platform suite of
applications from feature inception, research, through to
delivery.
As a creative problem-solver by nature, designing solutions
that will bring value and delight to users and addressing the
causes of bad user experience is what I’m passionate about.
Having a background in software engineering, I also have
strong full stack application development skills, namely in
web development (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and Python to name a
few) and native iOS/MacOS development in Swift and
Objective-C.
In 2018 I conducted a successful UX talk and workshop with IT
teachers as the audience to spread awareness on how to involve
users in the design phase of a product.
Mentoring at the successful first edition of
LearnTo iOS, an iOS development course, and volunteering at
Django Girls Belfast
were highly rewarding experiences, inspiring women, students
and professionals to pursue engineering careers.
I’ve been practising photography for 10+ years working on
different genres. My favourite ones are music, landscape and
abstract photography. I constantly experiment in my creative
process with both digital and analog mediums.
I released
“The Starry-Eyed”, a small collection of songs written by me, under my stage
name Sylvy. My music is available to listen on all online
platforms.
Little trivia about me: I sung with famous Irish musician Glen
Hansard on stage a few times.
When I’m not behind a screen or playing music, you can find me
outdoors hiking or skateboarding.

"The Starry-Eyed" is an honest soul-touching ode to love
with all its ups and downs.
The EP was recorded in Italy with a couple of friends and produced
by
Nikolas Pumilia
for Himself Records.
I developed a concept for the artwork to match the mood of the album
and then I let my imagination run wild.
I took some self-portraits for promotional purposes that blended in
with the album's color palette and vibes.
Additionally, I designed printed promotional material to make it
easy for others to find my music and connect with me online.
This project involved the creation of a brand identity and designing
the user experience for Remix Records online presence.
Remix Records is a fictitious Irish independent record label based
in Dublin, Ireland.
Originally part of an academic assignment for the record label’s
launch, I redesigned the identity and website, reimagining the goals
and needs of Remix Records as an established company today.
Remix Records goals include:
The solution was to create a fresh brand identity that communicates friendliness, playfulness and delight which are characteristic of the company.
On top of that, the website has been carefully crafted to convey the brand's values and culture, with the use of delightful micro interactions,
fresh content and a friendly tone in the copy.
My husband and I wanted to incorporate our personalities into all
the details of our wedding day, which led to this personal project.
Elegant simplicity with a pop of colour and “vintage boho”
vibes
was the inspiration throughout the design process.
I was responsible for designing everything including our logo,
stationery, calligraphy, wax seals, a multi-lingual wedding website
and more. My husband got involved in the design process through feedback and
sketches for the table signs.

Water Squirrel is an immersive single-player indie game.
The goal is to help the Water Squirrel find a giant acorn by
avoiding obstacles along the way.

For this project, I explored the quirky idea of a squirrel underwater. Parallax Scrolling, a technique used in computer graphics where foreground images move by quicker than the ones in the background, also inspired this project giving a sense of immersion and an illusion of depth.
A user-centered approach was taken with the creation of a persona, scenarios and use cases. All vector game graphics and icons were designed by me from scratch for the game using Adobe Illustrator and Sketch.
Water Squirrel app was developed in Lua using Corona SDK, which provides a cross-platform mobile development platform especially suited for 2D games.
Additionally, I created an animated sprite for the launch screen and added a theme tune and audio effects to the game to make it more appealing.

My first role at VML Technology was Full Stack Product Engineer, where I contributed to shaping the company’s application suite for iOS and macOS, extending back-end functionality using Django. Aside from my development work, I introduced and led user-centred design processes and user research, becoming responsible for the user experience for the entire multi-platform product suite (Web, macOS, iOS and Android). My involvement in all stages of the product design process led me to become the first Product User Experience Lead at the company.
From research, feature inception to delivery, I am involved in every step of the product design process, ensuring UX decisions are carried out to production. My job entails leading design and user research, devising product requirements, mapping information architecture, creating user journeys, mockups and prototype testing, ensuring the best user experience for customers. Coming up with new product features, leading user research, using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to inform product decisions are all part of my role. I also lead regular Design Reviews and promote a two-way feedback between design and development teams, ensuring technical feasibility and alignment with the users’ needs and company goals. This contributed to the success of the company’s suite of cross-platform applications, praised by customers for their user friendliness and ease of use. Working closely with clients allows me to also understand our target audience better, refine user personas and identify areas of improvement in the product.
Visualise It is an experimental user-friendly web data visualisation tool which automatically analyses a dataset and generates meaningful data visualisations for it.
I developed this application as my final research project for my Bachelor’s Degree.
At the time of research, existing systems were mainly desktop
applications which focused only on relational data sets and required
prior knowledge or training.
Visualise It was born from the need for an easily
accessible data visualisation tool that anyone could use to analyse
datasets.
I developed Visualise It using web technologies such as
HTML5, CSS3, SVG, D3.js, Google Maps API and Bootstrap.
With Visualise It, users can upload data in one of three
formats (XML, csv or JSON). Then, data is analysed, filtered and
presented visually to the user.
The application automatically generates different visualisations
best suitable for the submitted data.
The data analysis is
done through an API called “The Semantic Detector”,
developed by fellow Computer Science graduate Gabriele Cigna.
Based on the API results, Visualise It then filters the
data and presents it visually. The various visualisations generated
are only the ones best suitable for the submitted data.
User interactions with data, such as choosing a graph’s variables
and animations are a crucial aspect of the application giving a tool
to the users to seamlessly speculate and analyse their data.
Given the broad scope and experimental nature of this project, Visualise It isn’t a definitive solution to the Information Visualisation problem but an attempt to solve it in an innovative way.

Picseed was born from a mutual passion for art and collaboration with Lisa Reburn, a talented colleague and friend.
The application was created as the final project of our MSc in Creative Digital Media in 2016 and was awarded top marks.
Our plan was to create an app to aid creatives in their inspiration process. User research and market analysis revealed there was a need for a such a tool.
Shown below are the affinity diagram we put together from our initial user research and some initial sketches I did.
User testing was crucial to Picseed’s development and
refinement.
We carried out frequent user testing sessions both in-person and
remotely as well as card sorting, A/B tests and focus groups.
The feedback gathered allowed us to refine the app and track issues in order to promptly find the best solution using the latest design standards and state-of-art technologies.
Developing Picseed was at times challenging but overall a
rewarding experience.
Data modeling and code design at various stages of development was
fundamental in achieving the application’s requirements.
Content is sourced from reputable art content providers such as Behance and hand-picked curation art Tumblr blogs.
Before launching Picseed’s beta testing, we decided to create a web page for the app to promote it and give Picseed an online presence.
Lisa took care of the web design and I coded the website using Bootstrap and the latest web technologies.

Collaboration on promotional material for Nik and Himself's second album comprising of photography, graphic design and video work.
Nik came to me for promo photoshoots for his album. After discussing a few ideas together, we did the photoshoots and used one of the photos as part of the album cover.
I designed two album covers for Nik, one for his second album "My Second Try" and another one for his original Christmas single titled “Another Christmas without you”.
For “My Second Try”, Nik had a clear idea of the kind of
imagery he wanted for his album cover.
On top of that, he
wanted to incorporate his favourite landscape photograph of mine,
one that features crashing waves into the Irish Sea.
Following his brief, I created a couple of design variations playing
with the concept of double exposure which I felt was best suited for
his vision for the album.
For the “Another Christmas without you”’s cover, I tried to add a Christmas touch with one of my bokeh photos and by turning the logo into a festive decoration.
During the second photoshoot we did, I recorded a performance of his single "My Second Try" using a two-camera setup comprising of a fixed camera and a hand-held one. The video editing was done by Nik.
A selection of music photography I have taken through the years. This genre of photography combines two artistic passions of mine.
From ragged clothes and rocking solos to gypsy souls and mellow guitar tunes, music is a beautiful art, a universal language charged with emotions bringing people together. I enjoy capturing the musicians' energy on stage and capture their unique talent.

A selection of landscape photographs I have taken through the years.
I have always been fascinated by the beauty of nature, and
landscapes are a wonderful expression of what Mother Nature can
offer to us. So intricate and simple at times, they are compounds of atomic
elements that together create many patterns, textures and colours.
Season by season, every corner of the Earth is unique in its own way
and we all should respect it.
I strive to portray landscapes in their raw form, highlighting their
peculiarities.
